Volunteer & Training at Save On Radio

At Save On Radio, we believe in the power of voices. Independent music, grassroots stories, and bold ideas thrive here because of the energy of our volunteers. When you give your time to Save On Radio, you’re not only supporting a platform that amplifies community—you’re also investing in yourself. Volunteering with us means gaining hands-on training, discovering new strengths, and joining a supportive creative network.

Why Volunteer

Impact:
Your contribution makes a difference from day one. Whether you’re helping a host prepare their next interview or cutting together a promo clip, you’re part of what reaches the airwaves. Our shows spotlight emerging artists, social movements, and cultural conversations that might not find a platform elsewhere. Volunteers help shape those narratives, amplifying voices that need to be heard.

Learning:
Save On Radio is a living classroom. Instead of sitting through long lectures, you’ll learn in action—by running equipment, scheduling shows, editing audio, or even taking the mic. Every mistake is a chance to improve, and every show leaves you sharper. The skills you build transfer beyond broadcasting, equipping you for careers in media, communications, education, or event production.

Community:
Radio is a team sport. You’ll collaborate with hosts, producers, artists, and fellow volunteers who share your love for music and storytelling. The station is also a hub: people drop by to record, brainstorm, and connect. Many volunteers go on to form creative partnerships, launch podcasts, or co-produce live events. In short: you won’t just gain skills—you’ll gain people who believe in you.

Volunteer Roles

We know volunteers have different talents and schedules. That’s why we offer varied roles, each with its own focus and time commitment.

Production Assistant

  • Duties: Handle mic setup, check sound levels, prep headphones, and keep recordings on track. You’re the backbone of the studio.
  • Time: Around 3–5 hours weekly, with shifts scheduled around studio bookings.

Show Runner

  • Duties: Work alongside hosts during live broadcasts—cueing tracks, monitoring timing, handling call-ins, and prepping guests. You’ll learn how to keep a show seamless under pressure.
  • Time: 2–4 hours per show, often evenings or weekends.

Social Copywriter

  • Duties: Turn station highlights into engaging posts. Write captions, schedule content, and keep listeners informed and excited. Great for volunteers who thrive online.
  • Time: Flexible, usually 2–3 hours weekly. Remote-friendly.

Audio Editor

  • Duties: Edit raw recordings into polished segments, add intros/outros, balance sound levels, and cut unnecessary pauses. You’ll sharpen both technical and storytelling instincts.
  • Time: 3–6 hours per project, depending on show length.

Street Team Member

  • Duties: Represent Save On Radio at concerts, community gatherings, and festivals. Hand out flyers, connect with listeners, and invite new artists to get involved.
  • Time: Flexible, event-based—great for social extroverts.

Training Path

We don’t expect you to walk in knowing how to run a soundboard. Our structured pathway helps you grow step by step:

Onboarding – Learn the basics of our station: safety protocols, safeguarding values, and a tour of the equipment.

Shadowing – Observe live shows, watch how producers and hosts interact, and ask questions in real time.

Co-hosting – Take on small responsibilities like reading intros, cueing tracks, or asking a question during an interview.

Independent Segment – When you’re ready, design and run your own short segment with light supervision. This is where your creativity shines.

Skills You’ll Build

By the end of your volunteer journey, you’ll have a toolkit of real-world abilities:

  • Audio Basics: How to set up and position mics, adjust levels, and troubleshoot common issues.
  • Editing: Using software to clean recordings, remove noise, and create smooth transitions.
  • Research: Preparing background notes on guests, sourcing music, and curating themes.
  • Interviewing: Building rapport, asking strong follow-ups, and managing conversation flow.
  • Live Ops: Running a show in real time, balancing timing, ads, and unexpected surprises.
  • Collaboration: Working with a team under deadlines, adapting quickly, and giving clear feedback.

Inclusion & Safeguarding

Save On Radio is more than a studio—it’s a safe space. We are committed to:

  • Clear conduct standards: Respect and accountability are non-negotiable.
  • Equity training: We offer workshops on inclusion, accessibility, and respectful communication.
  • Confidential reporting: Volunteers can raise concerns without fear of retaliation.
  • Accessibility: Flexible scheduling, alternative roles, and physical accommodations where possible.

We believe everyone’s voice matters. Diversity isn’t just welcomed—it’s celebrated.

Your work deserves acknowledgment. Here’s how we give back:
